the splines get wore and they will not stay in the lock position the coupler is a little softer then the axle but if you have a u joint out then the needle bearing in the outer hub is more the likely shot also and the rubber compresion seal is shot also the hole thing comes in a rebuild kit from auto zone same as older chevy and gmc trucks. but i'll still bet it's the couple and axle shaft. only trucks i ever owend are dodge. you have dana front ends in them DON'T go to dodge for parts go the auto zone or napa
