I would try the drill and tap method . We used to have a really experienced welder here at our machine shop . He and I discussed this one time . He told me that he had welded a cracked block once at the insistance of his customer . He told me that no matter what he did , the weld cracked behind him as he welded . He has brazed a few with success , but he recomended the plugging method . He said that he had 100% results . With proper grinding , you can barely detect the work .
