Are you saying the motor on occasion will not start like it has a dead spot or are you saying the motor just quits running for no apparent reason? If it is not wanting to start sometimes, the problem most likely a bad start winding or the points in the start winding are oxidized/burned. If it has a start capacitor this needs to be checked also. Kind of like an old tractor just needing a little attention.
