The reason they breathe so good is that the filter is pretty coarse. This can let dirt through if they are not oiled just perfectly. If you over oil them (easy to do) they will let some of the oil into the air intake tube and past the throttle body and then foul the mass airflow sensor. If you have a turbo diesel they can let enough dirt through to take out the veins on the cold side of the turbo, then the engine gets to eat the dirt too. Those things are probably fine for city driving but out in the dirt they are pretty risky. Greg
