Hey Pete, More than liikely in an 86 1 ton van, it`s a 400 trans. If it is you probably broke the reverse band. Bad part is that it is way in the back of the case. So everything has to come apart. The other hard part is finding a good one anymore, most of them are 20-30 years old now and with scrap being higher lately, I know alot of the yards around here are crushing older vehicles like mad. Still, you should be able to find something and if your pulling it yourself, you won`t really have any labor into it. If it is a 400, one thing to check is to drop the pan, and there is a round cover held on with 6 bolts. Take the cover off and there is your band apply servo. If you are lucky the servo just broke. That would be all you have to replace.

On closer examination (and some reading in a AC D-14 service manual), I found out that this is a pretty ingenious method of cleaning the air in the tractor's intake tract.
