My old 1984 Sub 6.2 diesel is a daily driver. It's been well below -20 here several nights these last couple of weeks. It sits outside, with a single 600 Watt block heater plugged in, and #1 diesel in the tank. It has NOT failed to start YET. I have 10-30 dino oil in the engine, and haven't used ANY fuel additives.
