A "TA" (as used by IH) is simply a 2-speed transmission, ahead of the tractor's main transmission, that can be shifted "on the go" to give about a 30% REDUCTION in speed, and corresponding INCREASE in torque. The first ones were where mechancially shifted, by the direct action of the TA lever upon a clutch, and the later ones used hydraulically-actuated multiple disc wet clutch packs. Unfortunately, a word commonly associated with TA's is "OUT", and that word is commonly associated with $$$$$.
