Are ammeter connections all the same?

My 1954 Fordson has an ammeter where you thread the wire
through a brass ring on the back, but replacement ammeters also
come with pos/neg terminal posts where you cut and connect the
wire. Are these ammeters interchangeable? Thanks for your help.
