A quarter-wave length antenna is the most efficient, but at 27 Mhz, a quarter-wave is 108", so you don't see too many of the long whips anymore. Remember though, the further you depart from that length, the more inefficient your antenna will be, and an 18" antenna is nearly useless at CB frequencies unless you're content to only talk between the combine and the unloading rig. I'd recommend a 48" fiberglass stick mounted on the bed rail as the best compromise between convenience and performance, but certainly nothing shorter than 36". A roof mounted 36" base-loaded antenna is also a good choice, as the better location helps offset the reduced efficiency of the shorter whip.
