With a car that old, the insurance co will total it just because it will cost more to fix it than the blue book shows it is worth. If you want, you can negotiate for a reduced settlement and keep the car. Depending on the amount of damage, you might look into buying the salvage and having a body shop repair it for you. I drove a "totaled" 85 Suburban roll over for 15 more years and a VW Rabbit diesel that was "totaled" twice (made money on that car) then sold it after 4 yrs and two teenagers for more than I originally paid for it. If you know a good body shop they can cut a whole rear end off one car and put it on another. The biggest proglem is if the frame was bent. That leads to many problems with alignment and tracking of rear differential. (Just my experience after 8 yrs working in "auto recycling business")
