Well you know you may well be within you legal rights to keep the deposit. What everybody else said I believe to be right. But this thing could get ugly, the question is do you want to spend a lot of time dealing with this ahole. Myself I would just chalk it up to experience send the money back get a signed release and receipt call it a day. In light of not having a written sales contract he may be able to make a weak case against you. That is enough to tie you up for years in court. A $1000 bucks is pocket change when it comes to court time! right!!
