Always put the smooth side towards the tire (where the cross bars hook to the side chain) not the crimped side. Also I always put the latches to the front of the tractor when you throw them up on the tire. that way the extra side chain length can be tied back without changing its initial direction. Sounds confusing I know, but it will look simpler when you are out there doing the "hands on"
