I hear ya on the amp draw but when the switch contacts open an the magnetic field in the solenoid collapses it can provide a back emf that can be hundreds of volts an provide an very large Arc current for a few milla seconds. That is the reason they install a snubber diode across the clutch on your AC. I know the switch in my Bobcat won't last for 2 dozen operations without the diodes but with the diodes added it has been on the same switch for 4 or 5 years, just my experience. :)
