Yes...... that's true. But, some engines, and mabey this is one, will retard the timing when they start to ping on low octane gas. Put higher octane in, timing advances back up, power and mileage increase.... It's hard to bite the bullet and buy the more expensive gas, but in some rare situations, it does pay.
The higher octane gas does have a lower energy value, but the engine is getting more from it....
