I've owned a 2001 s-10 truck(same as a blazer), the ex wife had a 98 s-10 blazer, and my brother has a 2001 s-10 blazer. All were 4-wd, all had the 4.3, and the truck was the only manual shift. The 4.3 is a good engine, as long as its cared for. I personally won't own an automatic, but thats just me. The ex's was an auto and it was at 150,000 miles and that was the last contact I had with it, but I had heard through the grapevine that she had started having tranny trouble, but she drove like a mad woman. The brothers tranny went out at 75,000 miles, but he tows a lot. The automatic's have a a sun shell peice that doesn't like to tow very much, so watch for one that has towed a lot. The front ends under the 4wd's suck. I promise you will be changing front wheel hub assemblies(wheel bearings, you can't repack them, they are sealed), front axels, and upper and lower(more lower than upper) ball joints. I WILL NEVER OWN ANOTHER 4WD GM COMPACT OR MIDSIZE. None of the problems were serious, but who wants to be nickel and dimed to death or has the time to always change wheel hub assemblies. The only other problem I had with my truck was it liked to eat the u-joint on the rear of the driveline, but I've never heard anyone else complain of that one, so I must have just been lucky. Hope this helps some.
