I still get a chuckle out of a line from an old M Moline operators/repair manual, said " If the head gasket shows no damage,clean, coat both sides with grease and reuse".
Personal experience with high compression 440 Chrysler race engines, is that I had no problem reusing the same head gasket 4-5 times as lomg as it was returned to the same side of the original block and cylinder head.
