What's wrong? battery box corrosion

Tractor is a 6 volt, jd 40W.
last summer I bought a new battery box, cleaned the tractor and
painted around the battery area, primed and painted the new
battery box - put 'er together. Now (8 months later) - the bottom of the box has 1/2 the paint
loosened, and there is a teaspoon of white corrosion there, the
cables are clean, with vaseline coating. I am REALLY CAREFUL
when checkng the water, or adding water, to not spill any over
the battery. What's wrong? How to keep the box from corroding?
