exhaust pipe welding

A friend (really it isn't me) was too close to a short and broke the exhaust pipe off at the base where it goes into the exhaust manifold - gas Minneapolis Moline 670 from mid '70s - what are the cures - he has taken to a nearby guy that heated it all up and tried to weld it but it cracked up and came apart on cooling....

we had an old oliver 88 on a cron picker that had that same ailment when we bought it but it was welded and was OK
