Carburetor or fuel injection? If its a carb, agree that the accelerator pump is the first place to start. Take the air cleaner off, look down the carburetor bore, open & close the throttle a couple time, & see if its pumping gas into the carburetor throat (the jet will be above the throttle plate). Backfiring through the carb indicates its running extremely lean at that time. Does it do the same thing if you accelerate very gently?
