318 Perkins connecting rods

Which way do the connecting rods in an A4.318 Perkins deisel on a 285 Massey face? When torn down, the numbers on the caps were facing the left or pump side of the engine. But the IT book states in no less than 4 places that the numbers should face the camshaft side of the engine. This engine was majored before, and the rods could have been turned around, but that was over 10 years ago!
Help anybody! I don't think anyone on the Massey page knows.
