I've built/rebuilt several, Either way the preparation for the weld must be very well done.
The arm should be taken off (for flat weld position) and the old socket removed after marking for the needed cut. The cut should then be ground to match the new component.
I like the socket/ball better than the one with a piece of arm, for the reason that the bending moment (sorry for the high fallooten term) applied to the location of the weld will be far less when the weld is closer to the ball hole. This doesn't mean a poor weld is OK, it just means the weld will be under less stress. It will also be better looking. Groove the weld point to about 1/3 material thickness, make short passes (1"), and let it cool for three or more minutes between passes. Go for it. (I like E-7014) JimN
