3 Wire generator? Wow, it has been so long since I had to figure one out. You take a short piece of wire and while it is running, just touch it real briefly to make a spark. It was done wrong on our TO 30 and the cut out points stuck, so when it was shut off, the battery drained back through the generator. So you got an ammeter, and by the sounds it works. Also from your description it is hooked up right, but would feel better if someone would confirm.
