Well last night after work I planted a little sweet corn. Used to figure if I planted on my mother's birthday (4/26) I would have corn for my sister's birthday (7/18). With warmer weather maybe a little sooner. Some guys around here planting under clear plastic get it before July 1st.
On another topic from an earlier post concerning off farm jobs to be able to farm. It seems that just about all the farmers I know have some outside income source in the family. Mostly to provide health benefits in addition to the money. In about a year I'll be able to retire from this job if I think I can afford it. My retirement will cut my off farm income in half and I will still need to buy insurance. At least I have enough years in that I can still pick up insurance for myself and my wife reasonably. I'm hoping that having more time on the farm will allow me to extend my seasons somewhat and increase income. My wife just wants me around more to help in late August and September when I return to this job and all the harvesting and marketing become her responsibility. We'll see. Phil
