You can TIG weld the tank, but I would recommend steam cleaning the inside of it first, if possible. If you can't, it can be welded but you will most likely have a fire inside the tank. You can also weld on a gas tank after you have thoroughly steamed the inside of the tank with some 250 to 300 degree water. You can also MIG weld it, but it's easier to get a leak free weld in a single pass with a TIG. I've repaired several tanks, both gas and diesel, with MIG and TIG.
