O/T computor question

My E mail all of a sudden stopped showing up. I got my computor friend to check it out. He found out by getting rid of my fire wall protection I got my E mail to work. I still have my virous protection. So now with only virous protection, my friend says someone can get into my computor and get my information. How do the crooks do this? What protection should I get now? I can take anyone of my tractors apart down the valve caps, but these computors get the best of me. I don't know a ram from a can of spam. Stan
