Last fall there was an extensive discussion on this forum regarding the merits of diesel additives such as Power Service. Opinions ranged from 'it's snake oil' to 'the stuff really works'. Since I was about to leave on a 5000 mile tour of Texas in a 04 1-ton Dodge 4wd diesel pulling a trailer I decided to test Power Service. I was part of the 'snake oil' persuasion. Using only the on-board computer, reducing variables as much as possible, being as objective as possible, repeating each test as often as practical, I got a 10%+ increase in mileage. I don't know if it cleaned my injectors, increased my cetane rating, lubricated my injector pump, treated contaminated fuel so it would burn, or added anything else to the equation. There is a very real possibility that the results of this test are unique to my truck or that unusual circumstances beyond my control prejudiced this test. A 10%+ increase in mileage seems to be 'to good to be true'. However, with $3.00 diesel fuel I think further test makes sense. Power Service adds about $.08 a gallon to the price of diesel. I would like to see additional objective test made by the 'big kids' out there to see if additives do anything other than make the producers of the stuff rich.

In this series we are going to investigate and learn the basic rudimentary skills of understanding this lingo.
