This is one of those things that, I don't think I've ever given much consideration to, although I heard one story about it as a kid, the person involved having to quickly shed his clothes while others hosed him off. Since reading about this here, the safety glasses go on everytime, when I charge a battery I clean the top, the caps come off first, check electrolyte, leave caps loosely on top, connect to terminals, then plug charger in, same in reverse when disconnecting. Jumping batteries on things, use similar care. There is something about a volatile gas like this, with such a low flash point, in addition to also being concentrated inside a plastic case, that could send shrapnel your way with one spark, that seems to get my attention without hesitation. The eyes being these soft little sphere's, somewhat stronger than martini olives, vs. a highly caustic substance and high velocity flying shards of a heavy plastic case, kind of tips you off as to changing your ways a little. Wonder if there is any footage taken from a safety lab, showing one of these exploding, boy that ought convince a person.
