Fear and respect all batterys,I have never heard of a battery blowing simply because it was jumped from a larger voltage battery. Most result from overactive acid in all or even one cell. The production of the vapor and some source of ignition is devestating. In high school Vo tech we were starting a piece of equipment with a jump/charger. We were just trying to start to diagnose and fan shroud was missing. One of the other kids began revving engine and positive lead began to come off and head for fan, i quickly reached to gab clamp and BOOM. I as well as my buddy standing next to me were covered in acid. I had a large piece of plastic shell lodged in my forearm.Yeah it hurt but the acid in it hurt much worse in a few short minutes. Since then any batteries that show sign of any leakage I rinse with water and remove caps. Connect clamps and move to a safe position to start charging. It only takes one time to make you safe..
