OK Allan that makes sense. What sort of soils are you on, are they Vertosols as in cracking clays. What sort of effective rooting depth do you assume, we have similar looking soils here in Australia. They have a rooting depth of 2 metres and can store up to 250mm of plant available water. They wet up over summer or winter and then are planted every year to a crop. Little rain is needed through the growing season due to stored moisture. Most people on these big heavy soils chemical fallow here in Australia. We dont get your winter freeze thaw effect either.
