I have an "original" restored Cub (1962) and a 1250 (1977), and both are fantastic machines. I don't know much about the Kubota-powered '88 you were looking at back in 1998, however, I do have a comment about Japanese diesels. My 1986 John Deere 330, which is powered by a Yanmar 3-cylinder diesel has been a superb machine, with no problems for the 4 years I have owned it. The original owner said it only needed basic maintenance in its first 9 years. Bottom line, I think the small Japanese diesels are probably pretty good for the long haul.
