High range reverse is locked out on all 584/585 and 68x 78x
machines I've been on. Both the type with the slot shifters and the
type with the more normal levers.

It is pretty common for the transfer nubbin to wear so the switch
from the high-neutral-low fork is dropped in neutral or low when
you head for the switch over to the reverser fork. I often would be
stuck in low and have to bang the mechanism from underneath or
fish a screwdriver down in to line the forks up again.

Could probably add another lever to have high range reverse.
