Use the glow plugs, that's what they're for. If you can, get a magnetic-based electric heater, and put it on the oil pan. Then plug this and the block heater into your generator, it'll speed up the process. It'll also be easier on the starter if the oil is warm. I've never had to use starting fluid yet, I just sometimes forget to unplug both cords!
