Kim, I live in central Wisconsin where we can get down in the -20 degree range. My 5000 Ford Diesel starts very easily (without starting fluid) if I plug in the heater about an hour before I try to start it. The heater is a "tank heater" which warms the water in the engine block. I have found the block heater and the oil heater to be just about useless when I want to start in very cold weather. I agree that there would be some merit in also heating the oil pan, but it sure won't help to crank that thing over! As far as using a portable generator, I don't see why not - I use a 50 foot extension cord on a 110 volt/15 amp outlet with no trouble. To save on electricity, I have installed a timer with an electrical outlet attached, so that the heater will turn on at a preset time so I don't have to run out to the shed an hour before I need the tractor.
