I've got ideas in my head for putting diesel engines in a variety of older vehicles almost always with a gear splitter... With a 5 spd thats 10 gears and 2 reverse. I know what you're saying, I saw a couple guys with a Chevy 3500 dually pulling a boat the other day, the boat was massive! I can't believe it was safe, the boat was huge... They were in the slow lane barely making 55mph.
