Depending on what kind of chain it was, it may not have been hardened or tempered in the first place. If it was mine I would only use it for pulling rocks or stumps, etc. You don"t want to get caught on the highway using anything but factory chain to hold anything down. Even if you are not at fault for an "incident" some lawyer will make life tough for you. Stick to the D.O.T. rules and avoid a lot of trouble. Sad but true, just my opinion, Paul
