As always "it depends" is the correct answer. In Kansas farmers need a CDL to operate any vehicle (or combination of vehicle & trailer) over 26000 pounds Gross Vehicle RATING (doesn't matter what its tagged or actually weighs). Farmers are exempt from some logbook requirements and drug testing when operating close to home. To my understanding the exemptions only applies to OWNER OPERATORs - not employees. To get the correct information you need to contact the STATE DOT, don't bother talking to the local court house people - learned my lesson on that a couple years ago.
