I am in the same boat with the step son. Mine is 9 and his dad is a phycho/pathological liar/thief/scum/whitetrash/dirtbag so the kid goes over there and gets refresher courses on how to lie and deceive and manipulate his mother on a regular schedule. he keeps his skills sharp that way. I don't know seriously how long I can take this. I can see him growing up to be the same type of trash that crashed your truck. I am like you the one that is boring because all I do is work to provide and his dad like video games and stupid lord of rings movies and star wars and other fiction crap. Try getting a kid used to that into fixing tractors, welding or farming or having any responsibilities.
