You are correct in that the width of the timing mark is 2 degrees. One tooth the wrong direction and the valves would just be touching the piston. If you had the pump apart did you install the cam pump ring correctly. It can be installed bsckwards, because the injection pump can be install on both clock and counter clockwise positions.
