I have a '32 Ford PU. I bought it with the original, but wreaked, Model B engine more than 40 years ago. The first engine I put in was a '51 Mercury. Ran that for 20 years with a '39 Ford tranny. The rear end (replaced 2 pinion gears) wouldn't hold up so I replaced it with a later ('38 ?) axle. I found a fresh 220 Mercedes diesel. Made an aluminum adaptor plate for the '39 tranny and new motor mounts. It runs nice. Sounds like an original model B. You should go with a diesel. A VW should fit with no problems. You will probably be able to do 90 mph because they can rev.
