The clear coat on the top of my kid's 85 Plymouth started coming off in patches, and looking really ratty. I lifted off what I could with tape and did some sanding until almost all of the clear was off the top. Then I resprayed a couple of coats of new clear over the base coat.

The car looked a lot better that summer and through the next winter, but by the end of the second summer, the clear was coming off in patches again. But by that time, my son had pretty much worn the car out.

I have seen a lot of vehicles from that era with bad clear coat. A guy once told me that the manufacturers were just getting into that process and needed to learn what would hold up over time. The 90's and later vehicles seem to do better.

My experiment in respraying clear was not very successful in the long term, but really did make the car look better for awhile. Maybe I didn't prep the surface just right, or maybe the clear I used was not the correct one. If your base coat is not torn up, you might want to try sanding off the lifted or hazed clear coat and respraying the proper clear. Your automotive paint store can probably help you select clear that might hold up better than the junk I used. Good luck!
