We are here in South Dakota (about 50 miles west of Pierre) cutting wheat. Or I should say we WERE cutting wheat. Got almost an inch of rain yesterday evening. VERY welcome moisture on everything but the wheat. We got to 115 degrees on Saturday. Makes for good combining. We started combing for a friend on June 30 and have been going steady since then. Kind of needed a break though. We did 2 "custom" jobs and we have since moved on to our own. With the spring and winter wheat, we have about 1100 acres to do with one 1680 Axial flow combine. With 5100 hrs. on the machine, we are thankful for every day we are able to go without a breakdown. As for moving down the road, don't you just hate that. We were moving down a heavily traveled highway on the 3rd of July. Everybody was in a BIG hurry to get to their vacation destinations. We had the header off the combine and on a trailer, so we were not blocking anyone's "progress". A small Chevy Blazer passed us and went a few miles down the road where 3 of the occupants got out to answer "nature's call" I went by them just as they were getting back in their vehicle. When they came back on the highway, they passed me with no problem and one of the young lads leaned out the window and gave me the one finger wave. I only got the first three digits of the liscense plate. I wish I could have gotten it all so I could have got into contact with them somehow to see what I did to deserve their wave. Most of the locals are fine, it seems the one's that are in a hurry have Rapid City, Aberdeen or Sioux Falls plates on their vehicles.
