I guess I should consider myself lucky. My 1999 Silverado 1500 4WD, 5.3 liter Vortec -- 18-18.5 mpg highway empty, 14-15 mpg pulling my boat or 16 ft. flatbed and JD tractor. Only modification is dual exhaust with Flowmaster mufflers.
My brother-in-law has a 2006 Chev Avalanche. Don't know what engine he has, but averages 19-20 mpg highway.
