Good info George, the older generation around here did lots of canning, definitely some work, but has to be worth doing, probably a good feeling seeing the shelves stocked from the garden. That patch of dirt was deep, the ole 2 bottom is a wreck, that needs a tail wheel and another coulter, it wanted to sink to the bottom, I did not turn up any of the lighter color soil, which is glacial till, gravel/clay, lots of bones, Joe's old garden for many years, was real easy to work up, was planted with grass, rye cover crop came up from the rye mulch I used the previous fall, I will have to duplicate something similar, not sure what he did to get it like that, the lack of rocks is suprising.
