Hay balers, or hay presses, as they were known in the pre 40's time, have been around a long time. In the late 30's Case introduced the first really successful pull type hand tie baler. You had to tie this baler with wire. Two people were needed, one to "block" or insert the wires, and one to "tie" them on the other side of the chamber. This unit was extremely labor intensive, and unbeleivably dirty for the operators to work in. In 1940 Ed Nolt, a local farmer here in New Holland Pa. built a pull type baler to have a self tying feature that tied with twine, instead of wire. The war came along, and these machines were real labor savers and sold like hotcakes for many years. New Holland sold more than half of all balers ever built for many years, and is still a leader in this business. This product really started the New Holland Machine Co, which recently purchased the Case Co.
