Most transmissions don't have a drain on the torque converter so you are only changing about half the fluid. If your transmission is in "good shape" and you've been changing the fluid as recommended doing a "flush" by letting the pump replace the fluid is probably one of the best ways to do it. It takes about 3 quarts more then capacity ensure you get it all. For the most part the "filter" is a screen and wear particles of "newer" transmissions are small enough to pass through. If your transmission is throwing big enough "chunks" to get caught by the screen its on its way out and changing the fluid probably isn't going to help.
