If they are not leaking and if you for some unknown reason just insist on picking them up??? At least use a long stick with a beefy eyelet screwed into the end. Make a loop/noose with some strong cord/light rope. Hold the pole at an angle to your body instead of inline. If held inline and it blows, you may get speared. I would look close incase they are old road flares. If there is any doubt calling the authorites is still better than fooling around with the stuff. The bomb squad guys will be grateful for some something real to do. They train & train & train for months, even years between actual calls where is something that might go bang.
