Don't be in a rush to scrap either the engine or the generator, if that's what you mean by salvage. One of my parts catalogs lists Herc IXB with variations-2, -3, -5 and -5M, and it was used (mainly as IXB, IXB-3 and IXB-5, from what I find) in some smaller tractors and other equipment, enough so that you shouldn't have any trouble finding buyers. I can send a partial list, if you like.I think John S said that the number referred to the front end gearing, for timing and/or assessory drives; John, please correct that if it's wrong or incomplete. Does some rotation differ, like the Cont's? The generator's out of my field, but there are generator forums that'll advise you if no one here can.
