Worn Steering Sector,Losse U-Joints in the Steering Column and out of Balance Wheels or Bent Rims.Excessive wear or imbalance of rotating Wheels come upon a Steering System quickly especially one which is 60 years old.Don't junk it ,tear into it and you will find the problem quickly. I had one do the same once and found big gobs of mud on the inside of the rims.Cleaned them [the tires and rims] and had them balanced, end of problem. My advise.John
