If you figure the cost of a 1 wire alternator, a battery, and then the time to fab a bracket I suspect you'd have $75 - $100 in parts unless you just happen to have this stuff around from another project. Thats not considering replacement of bulbs for your lights.
If your going to keep the "original" look your probably going to spend much more converting everything over unless you need a generator overhaul anyway. The voltage regulator will set you back $45 to $60. I'm not sure what the conversion from 6v - 12v is for a generator. Then you still have the battery cost. Lets estimate $150 to keep the original look, but it's probably more.
Now, if you want to go to 12v, because you can"t stand the "unreliable" or slow cranking nature of things when trying to start the tractor your problem can probably be solved without making the conversion.
REPLACE all 3 of your battery / starter cables with 00 or 1 guage. Anything smaller and you will not get the current necessary to make things spin fast.
I just redid my Farmall H, the cables cost between $15 and $20, depending on the length. My generator was still good (brushes ok etc) and I replaced my voltage regulator ($46 at TSC) as I was not showing a charge. I rewired the tractor and put in 3 new lamps while I was at it since I was dong everything else.
I have approx $120 in refabricating / repairing the entire electrical system. My H cranks and starts just as good as if I had a 12v system. I didn't have to hack my hood or fabricate anything to make it work.
I suppose it's all relative to what you want to spend... I think it will cost atleast that to convert to 12v from scratch. Other than a "personal preference" I see no reason myself.
