On the typical 6 volt system, pos is the ground. On the typical 12 volt system, neg is the ground. Are you sure you have all 6 volt systems there?

I had a battery blow on me. My hearing did return in 5 seconds. It shorted itself when I hit the starter switch. I have a deep respect for hooking up jumper cables since then. I am _so_ glad I wasn't standing over the battery when the plastic blew off & acid went everywhere. I can understand your concern about where to place the cables. I would conect the neg cable to the tractor with the neg ground last, & place it on a metal ground not the battery.
